Starfish Initiative: Reaching Out to Local Students

This week, Marian welcomed a group of young scholars to interact with professionals and observe the workplace. Starfish Initiative is a college preparation program that matches high school students in Marion County with college educated professionals. These professionals volunteer to mentor students and encourage them to pursue their career dreams in a college or university. 100% of the students that completed the four-year program graduated from high school, and 98% accepted offers into a post-secondary educational institute.

Starfish Initiative: Reaching Out to Local Students

On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, Starfish scholars were invited to Marian Indianapolis to learn more about manufacturing, engineering, and business. Employees welcomed students in the early morning with donuts and orange juice. Next was a hands-on presentation to further explain Marian’s capabilities. Following the presentation, Marian’s VP of Operations, William Witchger, gave a building tour. Later on, the scholars split into two separate groups to shadow professionals in either the engineering or business (sales/marketing) divisions. During lunch, the scholars discussed their favorite parts of the tour as well as their career interests. The event allowed the scholoars to network and observe a real professional environment.
