Reaching out to students: Starfish Initiative
This week, Marian Inc. has welcomed a group of young scholars to interact with professionals and observe the workplace.
Starfish Initiative is a college preparation program that matches high school students in Marion County with college educated professionals. These professionals volunteer to mentor students as they guide them through high school graduation and encourage them to pursue their career dreams in a college or university. 100% of the students who completed the four year program have graduated from high school, and 98% have been accepted into a post-secondary educational institute.
On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, Starfish scholars were invited to Marian Inc. to learn more about manufacturing, engineering, and business. Students were welcomed in the early morning with donuts and orange juice followed by a hands on presentation to further explain Marian’s capabilities. A facility tour was given by Marian’s VP of Operations, William Witchger. Later on, the scholars split into two separate groups as they shadowed professionals in either the engineering or business (sales/marketing) divisions. A discussion was held during lunch where the scholars talked about their favorite parts of the tour as well as their career interests. The event was successful as the scholars were able to network and observe real life in the professional world.
